During my work as a counsellor, I am often asked, “How do I become a counsellor?” For some, this question is about developing counselling skills to enhance their current role in areas such as HR, management, consultancy, medicine, teaching, guidance, or support work. For others, counselling may become a profession in its own right.
Nightingale offers a one-day introductory workshop designed to provide clarity and direction. By the end of the day, participants will have an understanding of:
- The three core skills that underpin every counselling relationship
- Different counselling models and how to use them effectively
- The most appropriate routes into counsellor training
- Personal vocational assessment
- Creating a personal development plan
- The ongoing support available from Nightingale
The workshop enables you to plan your route, identify the client groups you may wish to work with, and gain a realistic insight into counselling. This includes understanding the role of the counsellor, professional boundaries, and what counselling truly involves. For some, this brings motivation and confidence to move forward; for others, it brings the important realisation that counselling may not be the right path—while still offering valuable skills that can enhance their existing profession.
As a counsellor with 25 years’ experience, I can honestly say that working with people and witnessing their growth is a privilege. I enjoy my work every day and have never experienced the “Monday blues.”

Florence engaged everyone with her depth of factual knowledge, challenging questions, relevant examples and, not least, great humour to make the workshop an informative and fun experience.
